I put down the paper. That will never be me. I pity the poor woman who’s become so lonely that she has sunk to the depths of personal advertisements. My husband of twenty-six years died eight months ago and my feelings on dating are very simple. I will never do it.

I miss my husband. His death was sudden . . . no time to say good-bye or tell him how much he was loved. I came home from Nordstrom’s, put down my shopping bags, ate a banana, looked at the mail, went upstairs and found his still body. In an instant, my life changed.
